Viper by Bex Hogan

Review Time – Viper

Another week in Lockdown done, another book read, another review posted.

This week we hosted a very impromptu read along of Viper by Bex Hogan in honour of the release of Venom on 16th April.

Viper (Isles of Storm & Sorrow Series)

First and foremost, we LOVE pirate themed books and devour anything that involves a strong female wielding a cutlass. Kayleigh has read Viper previously and gushed about it so much that when Tish finally picked it up, she knew she was going to be in for a good ride. Viper gave us all of this and more!

Viper is a great intro to the Isles of Storm and Sorrow Trilogy that we can’t wait to read more of – it’s a classic swashbuckling pirate story mixed with modern ya fantasy tropes!

We really fell for Marianne and rooted for her til the very end in her quest to destroy the Viper and reunite the Twelve Isles. She is the classic strong independent female lead that a lot of women can look up to and empathise with! We also absolutely love Grace – she’s the friend that everyone needs. Not only is she a badass assassin, she is also super mysterious and drops really cool facts and stories – you can’t help but be in awe. Everyone needs a Grace in their life!

The plot itself is a hard one to make unique – after all there are a lot of Pirate themed tales out the at the moment. However, we felt like the character’s story and dilemmas made up for this completely. It is really intriguing to see how the author creates and develops an internal conflict in a character and Marianne was no exception! We wouldn’t want to be her…loyalty to others and to oneself is a hard line to balance.

Not only does the plot unravel at a fast pace but it has enough twists and turns that you won’t want to stop reading once you start. Our only negative would be that it should be longer! There are a lot of backstories and plot points that could have been expanded on for a better experience, but hopefully that will come in the second book!
We thought the world-building was very well done and loved the concept of the different isles – Tish is already purchasing property on the Fourth Isle (Flower Isle)…it sounds absolutely divine 🌸. We cannot wait to learn more about the other Isles in Venom (especially Mist Isle and the Western Isles.

The release of Venom is fast approaching and we already have it on PreOrder so we won’t have to wait long. If you are from the UK, then you can enter here for a signed Bookplate and wooden Viper pin badge!

If you like Pirates, betrayal, fighting, romance, heartbreak, loyalty and all that kind of jazz, then this one is for you!

What do you think? Have you read Viper? What are some of your favourite Pirate themed books? Tell us in the comments below!

Lots of Love,

Kayleigh and Tish xx
